Reading Comprehension

Purpose:

The purpose of this was to help students become better at reading and comprehending texts. This was mainly to help students prepare for the SAT or the ACT where they need to read and answers question within a given amount of time.

Steps

1) Box “Subject(s)” and “Action Verb(s),” THEN test “Subject-Verb Agreement(s)”;

2) Circle “Adverb(s),” “Adjective(s),” and “Conjunction(s)” where applicable;

3) Test “Adverb-Verb Relationship(s)”;

4) Underline “Direct Object(s)”;

5) PARAPHRASE the meaning of the sentence based on 1)-4) CONCISELY;

6) Rewrite the meaning of the sentence on your own;

7) In the rewritten sentence, “Box,” “Circle,” and “Underline” each accordingly as in 1)-4); and

8) Ask another person to compare your product from 5) and 7) and evaluate whether both sentences are consistent in their meaning.

 

Repeat these steps until you feel very comfortable with them, and until you achieve the mastery of these steps.
